Commentary) or comparable text with
commentary (such as Dyer
& Seymour). You will also need
an Intermediate Greek Lexicon (or
better) and reference grammar.
Objectives: The first aim of this study is to build a command of basic vocabulary, syntax and interpretive skills for reading Greek prose. You should also gain a general sense of the political and intellectual background. The focus of our study is the 'defense speech' as a particular form of discourse with its own peculiar strategies and assumptions. After Plato’s version, we will continue with an excerpt from Crito, as time permits.
Requirements: competent translation from the Greek, command of vocabulary and grammar, using dictionary, commentary and other references. You will not be allowed to consult prepared translations in class. Keep a list of key vocabulary (esp. verbs with principal parts) and problematic constructions (e.g., conditions).
