Texts: Plato's Apology of Socrates, G.P. Rose ed. (Bryn Mawr Commentary);

Greek New Testament recommended (for readings in Acts  15-28, after Nov. 1).

You will also need an Intermediate Greek Lexicon (or better) and reference grammar.

Objectives: The first aim of this study is to build a command of basic vocabulary, syntax and interpretive skills for reading Greek prose. You should also gain a general sense of the political and intellectual background to these texts. The focus of our study (in both Apology and Acts) is the 'defense speech' as a particular form of discourse with its own peculiar strategies and assumptions.

Requirements: competennt translation from the Greek, command of vocabulary and grammar, using dictionary, commentary and other references. You will not be allowed to consult prepared translations in class. Keep a list of key vocabulary (esp. verbs with principal parts) and problematic constructions (e.g., conditions).

The Course Grade will consist of 2-3 quizzes (total 50%), Final Examination (30%) and record of daily participation. For rules regarding attendance, make-ups, non-discrimination and special accommodations, see online Policy Statement.
